Will Efficient Home Windows pay for themselves in Dallas?

"Energy efficient home windows pay for themselves" has always been a sales pitch and its never been more true than now. The past 10 years has seen the window industry take tremendous energy efficiency strides. However, during that same 10 years in Dallas utility costs have rocketed out of control. These days, highly energy efficient windows can pay for themselves in 5 to 10 years.
Of course vinyl, energy efficient windows aren’t the only factor that applies to an energy efficient home. Insulation, appliances and A/C units should also be considered. Still for the purposes of making a 'window decision', it is a good sign than many window manufacturers are considering a "40% guaranty". Apparently these forward-thinking window companies feel so strongly that their windows will save you 40% on your utilities that they may be willing to put it in writing.
Consider that many of our potential customers don’t enjoy the luxury of simply deciding "yes or no" - these unfortunate homeowners have cloudy, broken or leaky glass. If this describes you, consider the following options:
Three Possible Choices:
Efficient Replacement Windows
Replace your old, leaky windows with new efficient windows. Read more...
Replace the Glass Only
Keep your ugly, sticky old frames - just replace the glass.
Demolition
Knocking down your home could solve your window problems.
Vinyl or Aluminum / Which is better or more Efficient?
In almost every case Vinyl is better. Aluminum is painted... the paint is sprayed on - which will scratch, flake and peel, requiring re-painting or touch up. It is subject to impact damage and denting. Aluminum Windows corrode in moist air from pollution and airborne chemicals... and it readily conducts heat, cold and sound. it also supports condensation and can frost in cold climates.
Is cost a factor? In the past 10 years the cost of Aluminum has risen steadily as the price of an energy efficient window has dropped dramatically. Of course extremely low quality aluminum windows are still available and unfortunately builders are still building new homes using them but for the efficient minded customer - think vinyl. It is maintenance free - never requires painting... it is moisture resistant and has a high resistance to heat loss or gain. It is also resistant to condensation.
